I’ve always had a dream that when I turned 50 I would move to Paris and take up smoking. But lately I have been thinking, why wait? I want the COVID19 vaccine ASAP, but I can’t get it. It turns out smokers are eligible for the vaccine without even needing proof.
New Jersey is one of only two states that has included smoking among the high-risk medical conditions that make people eligible for the COVID19 vaccine. New Jersey is also a state that has not cleared the way for teachers to be vaccinated during the first phases of eligibility, according to an analysis released this week by Kaiser.
Determining the order of who should get the vaccine is a tremendous undertaking. However including smoking as a high-risk medical condition is a decision that leaves many questioning why especially when essential workers, such as teachers, are not being prioritized over smokers. Yet, “Cigarette smoking remains the leading cause of preventable disease and death in the United States”.
